I am pleased that you chose ‘Fortune and Men’s Eyes’ for your project.
For secondary sources on the Justice System and prison conditions, you
may need to go to the reference library in Toronto and to look over the
sections on sociology, penology and criminology to locate some books on
the subject. One I recommend is an account by Canadian writer Isabel Labourdais
on the arrest, trial, conviction and imprisonment of Steven Truscott,
a fourteen-year old boy, convicted of rape and murder in Ontario and sentenced
to be hanged in the 1950’s. There was only circumstantial evidence and,
after many years in prison, he was released after Isabel Labourdais’ book
was published.
